Hopman Cup: Croatia wins!

This Sunday, July 23, 2023, the finals of the first Hopman Cup were on the program! On this 5th day of competition, the public was treated to the match between Switzerland and Croatia. The women’s singles on center court brought together Céline Naef (Switzerland) and Donna Vekic (Croatia). The match was won by the Croatian Donna Vekic: 3-6 4-6. 

Nu zondag 23 juli 2023 stonden de finales van de eerste Hopman Cup op het programma! Op deze 5e wedstrijddag werd het publiek getrakteerd op de wedstrijd tussen Zwitserland en Kroatië. Het vrouwen enkelspel op center court bracht Céline Naef (Zwitserland) en Donna Vekic (Kroatië) samen. De partij werd gewonnen door de Kroatische Donna Vekic: 3-6 4-6.

The players then took to the court. At the end of the second match, Borna Coric beat Leandro Riedi 1-6 4-6. Croatia is the big winner of this first edition in Nice! Donna Vekic and Borna Coric lifted the iconic trophy on the clay of center court, presented by David Haggerty, President of the ITF (International Tennis Federation), alongside Iva Majoli, Tournament Director. The Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, presented the four players with an emblematic “I Love Nice”.

Daarna gingen de spelers het veld op. Aan het einde van de tweede wedstrijd versloeg Borna Coric Leandro Riedi met 1-6 en 4-6. Kroatië is de grote winnaar van deze eerste editie in Nice! Donna Vekic en Borna Coric tilden de iconische trofee op de gravel van het center court, uitgereikt door David Haggerty, voorzitter van de ITF (International Tennis Federation), samen met Iva Majoli, toernooidirecteur. De burgemeester van Nice, Christian Estrosi, overhandigde de vier spelers een symbolische “I Love Nice”.

The results of this first edition in Nice were very positive, with 20,000 spectators attending the 5-day competition from July 19 to 23, 2023, and almost 1,700 people spending time in the Hopman Cup VIP Village. 

De resultaten van deze eerste editie in Nice waren zeer positief, met 20.000 toeschouwers die de 5-daagse competitie van 19 tot 23 juli 2023 bijwoonden en bijna 1.700 mensen die tijd doorbrachten in de Hopman Cup VIP Village.

Commenting on Croatia’s victory, Tournament Director Iva Majoli told a press conference:
“I tried to be neutral, but in my heart when Croatia plays… Part of me always dreams that they will win. For such a small country, it’s an immense source of pride to have lifted the Hopman Cup trophy twice. I’m also very proud of Borna and Donna. At the start of the tournament, they weren’t very confident, they weren’t feeling at their best, but they gave it their all and got the better of their opponents. I hope that next year we’ll have a different final so that I can enjoy it and be 100% neutral!” she quipped. 

In een reactie op de overwinning van Kroatië vertelde toernooidirecteur Iva Majoli op een persconferentie:
“Ik probeerde neutraal te zijn, maar in mijn hart als Kroatië speelt… Een deel van mij droomt er altijd van dat ze zullen winnen. Voor zo’n klein land is het een enorme bron van trots dat we twee keer de Hopman Cup-trofee in de wacht hebben gesleept. Ik ben ook erg trots op Borna en Donna. Aan het begin van het toernooi waren ze niet erg zelfverzekerd, ze voelden zich niet op hun best, maar ze gaven alles en versloegen hun tegenstanders. Ik hoop dat we volgend jaar een andere finale hebben, zodat ik ervan kan genieten en mezelf kan zijn. 100% neutraal!”, grapte ze.
