David Goffin heeft in zijn eerste wedstrijd op de European Open vrij vlot de maat genomen van de Fransman Quentin Halys. Alexander Blockx kon van zijn goede vriend Gilles-Arnaud Bailly winnen in een felbevochten Belgisch duel. Voor Gauthier Onclin zit het tornooi in Antwerpen erop, na verlies in het enkel- en dubbelspel.
David Goffin had tegen Halys even tijd nodig om op toerental te komen, maar na een 0-3 achterstand en enkele sterke services van de Fransman vond hij het welletjes: hij raasde door naar 6-4 setwinst. In de tweede set kwam Goffin wel sterk uit de startblokken: in geen tijd werd het 4-0. Goffin gaf Halys geen tijd meer om naar adem te happen en al snel werd het 6-1. “Dit is een belangrijk tornooi voor mij. Ik heb hier naartoe gewerkt en met de steun van het Belgische publiek probeer ik ver te geraken deze week”, aldus Goffin na afloop.
Goede vrienden Blockx en Bailly keken elkaar in de ogen op Center Court voor een plaats in de hoofdtabel. Na een evenwichtig begin probeerde Bailly Blockx onder druk te zetten, maar buigen deed de Antwerpenaar niet. Blockx wist in het volgende spelletje wel door de service van Bailly te gaan. Hij behield de voorsprong en maakte het knap af met een ace op zijn eerste setpunt: 6-4.
Zelfde spelbeeld in de tweede set: lang was er evenwicht, maar plots was er in het elfde spelletje de break van Blockx en ook nu liet hij niet meer los: op zijn eigen service mepte Blockx de match uit: 7-5. Blockx neemt het morgen op tegen de Duitser Hanfmann.
Voor Gauthier Onclin was het bijltjesdag: eerst ging hij er uit in het enkelspel tegen Mpetschi Perricard. In de eerste set maakte Onclin een vroege break ongedaan, maar op het einde van de set was hij opnieuw op achtervolgen aangewezen. Het werd uiteindelijk 4-6 in de eerste set. De Fransman trok dat elan door in set twee tegen onze landgenoot: 2-6. Ook het dubbelspel aan de zijde van Michael Geerts bracht geen soelaas, al verkochten de Belgen hun huid heel duur tegen Bublik/Shevchenko: 6- 7(4) in de eerste set, 6-4 na een knappe tweede set. In de supertiebreak hadden Geerts en Onclin twee kansen om de match naar hun hand te zetten, maar Bublik en Shevchenko knokten terug. De Belgen moesten nipt met 10-12 de duimen leggen.
Dinsdag een nieuwe tennisdag met mooie matchen. Zo zullen de broers Tsitsipas samen dubbelen op Center Court. Dominic Thiem sluit de avond af met een duel tegen de Italiaan Luca Nardi.
